How to Split an Image for an Instagram Grid
Create a stunning Instagram profile grid from a single image. Learn how to split, download, and post tiles in the correct order for a seamless 3x3 grid that wows visitors — all in 5 simple steps.
Open the Instagram Grid Splitter
Go to the SocialKit Instagram Grid Splitter tool page. You will see an upload area where you can drag and drop your image or click to browse. The tool supports JPG, PNG, and WebP formats.
Use a high-resolution image (at least 1080x1080 pixels) for the best quality. Larger images produce sharper individual tiles.
Upload your image
Drag and drop your image into the upload area, or click to select a file from your device. The tool will display a preview of your image and automatically prepare it for splitting.
Square images work best for Instagram grids. If your image is not square, crop it before uploading for the cleanest result.
Choose your grid layout
Select your preferred grid size: 3x1 (three posts in a row), 3x2 (six posts in two rows), or 3x3 (nine posts in three rows). The tool shows a live preview of how your image will look when split and posted on your Instagram profile.
The 3x3 grid creates the most impact on your profile page, but it requires 9 posts. Start with 3x1 if you are new to grid splitting.
Split and download the tiles
Click "Split Image" and the tool instantly divides your image into individual tiles. Each tile is numbered in the correct upload order. Download all tiles at once as a ZIP file, or download them individually.
The numbering is crucial — upload tiles in reverse order (last tile first) so they appear in the correct position on your profile grid.
Upload tiles to Instagram in order
Open Instagram and post each tile in the reverse order of the numbering. If tiles are numbered 1-9, post tile 9 first, then 8, then 7, and so on. This ensures your grid appears correctly when viewed on your profile.
Post all tiles in quick succession (within a few minutes) to avoid gaps in your grid from other posts appearing in between.

Common questions
What image resolution do I need for an Instagram grid?
For a 3x3 grid, your source image should be at least 3240x3240 pixels (1080x1080 per tile). For a 3x1 grid, 3240x1080 is sufficient. Lower resolutions will work but may appear pixelated on high-density displays.
Do I need to post the tiles in a specific order?
Yes. Instagram displays posts in reverse chronological order on your profile. To make the grid appear correctly, you must upload tiles in reverse order — the last tile (bottom-right) first, and the first tile (top-left) last.
Can I split an image for a 3x1 row instead of a full 3x3 grid?
Yes. The tool supports 3x1, 3x2, and 3x3 layouts. A 3x1 row is a great way to test the grid concept before committing to a full 3x3 grid.
Will the tiles have borders or gaps between them?
No. The tool splits the image precisely so that when posted on Instagram, the tiles sit seamlessly next to each other with no visible borders or gaps, creating a perfect continuous image on your profile grid.
