Step-by-Step

Check for sudden reach drops

Open your Instagram Insights and compare your reach for the last 7 days against the previous 7 days. If your reach has dropped significantly (50% or more) without any change in your posting habits, you may be shadowbanned.

Also check your hashtag reach in Insights. If hashtags that used to drive traffic suddenly show zero impressions, that is a strong signal.

Post with a unique hashtag and test

Create a new post using a very unique, made-up hashtag that nobody else would use (e.g., #yourname_shadowban_test_2026). Ask 3-5 friends who do not follow you to search for that hashtag and see if your post appears in the results.

If your post does not appear in the hashtag search results for non-followers, you are likely shadowbanned.

Check the Banned Hashtag Checker

Open the SocialKit Banned Hashtag Checker and enter the hashtags you have been using recently. If any of them are flagged as banned or restricted, that could be causing your shadowban.

Remove all banned hashtags from your recent posts and avoid them in future posts.

Review your recent account activity

Shadowbans are often triggered by specific behaviors: using bots or automation, posting too frequently, engaging in spammy behavior (mass liking, mass following), or using banned hashtags. Review your activity and stop any suspicious behavior.

If you used any third-party apps for auto-liking or auto-following, revoke their access in Instagram Settings > Security > Apps and Websites.

Take a break and appeal if needed

Stop all posting and engagement activity for 48-72 hours. This gives Instagram's algorithm time to reset your account status. After the break, post high-quality original content and avoid any hashtags for the first few posts. If the issue persists, report it through Instagram Settings > Help > Report a Problem.

Most shadowbans are lifted within 1-2 weeks after you stop the triggering behavior. Patience is key.

Monitor your recovery

After taking corrective action, monitor your reach and hashtag impressions daily for the next 7-14 days. If your reach gradually returns to normal, the shadowban has been lifted. Continue to follow best practices to avoid future penalties.

Keep a log of your daily reach numbers so you can spot any future drops quickly.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does an Instagram shadowban last?

Typically, an Instagram shadowban lasts 1-2 weeks. However, if you continue the behavior that triggered it, the ban can be extended. In severe cases, accounts may face longer restrictions or permanent penalties.

Will I be notified if I am shadowbanned?

No. Instagram does not send notifications for shadowbans. The only way to detect a shadowban is by monitoring your reach, checking hashtag visibility, or having non-followers search for your hashtags.

Can I be shadowbanned on TikTok or Twitter/X too?

Yes. Shadowbanning exists on most platforms including TikTok, X (Twitter), and YouTube. The symptoms are similar: sudden reach drops without notification. The recovery process is also similar — stop suspicious behavior and wait.

Does using the same hashtags on every post cause a shadowban?

Repetitive hashtag usage alone may not cause a shadowban, but it can reduce your reach as Instagram's algorithm may flag it as spammy behavior. Rotate your hashtags and use only relevant ones for each post.

Ready to check your hashtags?

Open the Banned Hashtag Checker and verify that your hashtags are not causing a shadowban on your account.
