Vanity Metrics vs. Value Metrics

Vanity metrics make you feel good but don't help you make decisions. Value metrics directly correlate with business outcomes. The first step in analytics maturity is knowing the difference.

Vanity Metrics

Follower count
Total likes
Total impressions
Video views
Post count

Easy to measure, hard to act on. Don't drive decisions.

Value Metrics

Engagement rate
Conversion rate
Click-through rate
Audience growth rate
Cost per acquisition

Harder to measure, directly tied to growth. Drive decisions.

The Test

Ask yourself: "If this metric went up 10%, would I change my strategy?" If the answer is no, it's a vanity metric. If yes, it's a value metric worth tracking.

2

The Essential KPIs

These 7 KPIs cover the full social media funnel — from awareness to conversion. Track them weekly:

Engagement Rate

1–5%
(Likes + Comments + Shares + Saves) / Followers × 100

Reach

Growing 10%+ MoM
Unique accounts that saw your content

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

1–3%
Link clicks / Impressions × 100

Conversion Rate

2–5%
Conversions / Link clicks × 100

Audience Growth Rate

2–5% per month
New followers / Total followers × 100

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)

Varies by industry
Total ad spend / Number of conversions

Share of Voice

Growing quarterly
Your mentions / Total industry mentions × 100

Understanding Engagement Rate

Engagement rate is the single most important social media metric. It measures the percentage of your audience that actively interacts with your content. A high engagement rate means your content resonates; a low rate means you need to adjust.

Engagement Rate Benchmarks by Platform (2026)

Instagram Good: 1–3% · Excellent: 3–6%
TikTok Good: 4–8% · Excellent: 8–15%
YouTube Good: 2–5% · Excellent: 5–10%
LinkedIn Good: 2–4% · Excellent: 4–8%
X/Twitter Good: 0.5–1.5% · Excellent: 1.5–3%

Use our Instagram Engagement Calculator or TikTok Engagement Calculator to calculate yours instantly.

4

Reach vs. Impressions

These two metrics are constantly confused. Understanding the difference is crucial for interpreting your data correctly:

Reach

The number of unique accounts that saw your content. If one person sees your post 5 times, that's 1 reach.

Measures: Audience size

Impressions

The total number of times your content was displayed. If one person sees your post 5 times, that's 5 impressions.

Measures: Exposure frequency

The ratio of impressions to reach tells you how many times the average person saw your content. A ratio of 3:1 means each person saw it 3 times on average. If this ratio is too high (10:1+), you may be over-serving the same audience. If too low (1.5:1), you may need more frequency.

5

Conversion Tracking

Conversions are the bottom of the funnel — the actions that actually impact your business: sign-ups, purchases, leads, downloads. Without conversion tracking, you can't calculate ROI.

Use UTM parameters on every link you share — track which posts drive traffic

Set up conversion events in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Use platform-native pixels (Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag) for ad campaigns

Define what counts as a conversion: purchase, sign-up, download, or lead form

Track assisted conversions — social media often assists, not closes

6

Audience Growth Rate

Audience growth rate measures how quickly you're gaining followers. It's more meaningful than raw follower count because it accounts for your existing audience size.

Growth Rate = (New Followers / Starting Followers) × 100

A healthy growth rate is 2–5% per month for established accounts and 10%+ for new accounts. Track this monthly and compare against your industry average.

7

Content Performance Analysis

Not all content performs equally. Analyze your top and bottom posts monthly to identify patterns. Look for:

Which content formats get the most engagement (video, carousel, text)

Which topics drive the most saves and shares

What time of day performs best

Which hooks correlate with higher reach

Which posts drive the most profile visits and link clicks

Create a "winner's framework" — document what your top 10% of posts have in common and replicate those patterns.

8

Competitor Benchmarking

Your metrics in isolation are meaningless. You need context. Benchmark against 3–5 competitors in your niche to understand where you stand.

Engagement rate

Are you above or below niche average?

Posting frequency

How often do competitors post vs. you?

Growth rate

Who's growing fastest and what are they doing differently?

Content mix

What formats do top performers use most?

9

Setting Up Your Dashboard

A central dashboard saves hours of manual reporting. Use tools like Google Looker Studio, Notion, or our Analytics Dashboard to visualize all metrics in one place.

Connect all platform APIs (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.)

Create tabs for: Overview, Content Performance, Audience, Conversions

Set up automated weekly email summaries

Add trend lines, not just current numbers — direction matters more than position

Include your KPI targets next to actuals for instant comparison

10

When to Pivot Your Strategy

Data without action is just noise. Here's when to pivot:

3 weeks of declining reach

Algorithm change or content fatigue — test new formats

Engagement rate drops 30%+

Content isn't resonating — survey your audience

Growth rate below 1% for 2 months

You've hit a plateau — try new content pillars or platforms

CTR below 0.5%

Your CTAs or links aren't compelling — test new copy

11

The Reporting Framework

Create a weekly report that takes 15 minutes to produce and 5 minutes to read. Include:

Top 3 metrics vs. last week (with trend arrows)

Best-performing post of the week (with why)

Worst-performing post of the week (with why)

One insight or pattern noticed

One action item for next week

This framework keeps you focused on what matters and creates a historical record of your growth. Use our Analytics Dashboard tool to automate the data collection.
